Don’t Go Changing

Our Monday Listicles topic today is 10 Things You Have No Intention of Changing in 2013, chosen by Stasha.

This past week, being the first week in the new year, was full of talk of resolutions. It is to be expected.

I didn’t make any resolutions this year – I actually haven’t for a few years now. You see, I am more of a goal-setter than a resolution-maker. And my goals never change; they are ongoing. I tend to go with the standard ‘eat better, move more, be more organized’ sort of goals – and they always need attention.

But, there are some things about me that are a given. They just come with me as part of the built-in software. Just like mascara, these things are part of my makeup. And, as much as they may be annoying or embarrassing – now or in the future – it is just the way I am.

Sing it, Billy:

(Don’t worry, Billy – I won’t go changin’.)

So, for this year (and likely all to come,) here are

10 Things Not Changing About Me (Probably Ever)

1. I’m still going to be a bit of a geek. I am partial to sci-fi and Jane Austen. (I know my Star Trek captains and the colour of Mr. Darcy’s favourite coat.)

2. I’m still going to sing – probably loudly – in the car. And I probably won’t stop when another motorist sees me.

3. I am still going to turn the kitchen into a total disaster when I cook.

4. I am not giving up coffee. (As Taylor Swift so eloquently says: never, ever, ever. Like ever.)

5. I will still keep nearly every sentimental memento. Although, I will strive to organize them more – before my husband calls the producers of ‘Hoarders.’

6. I will still be clumsy. I have recently been told (by my husband) that I should just *not* run any more, at any time. He says the seconds I could potentially gain are just not worth the trip for stitches.

7. I will still laugh just a *little* too loudly in small gatherings.

8. I’m still going to write. (‘Cause this space, right here? Creating it was one of my highlights of 2012.)

9. I will still wear my heart on my sleeve and cry at random commercials, every children’s movie we watch and anytime someone else cries.

10. And, as long as I have my family by my side, a song in my heart and a cup of coffee in hand, I will still have the world on a string.

Hit it, Michael:

Bonus: I may always leave you with a song – mostly because everything reminds me of one.  (Hopefully it’s not an earworm – I’ve been known to do that, too.)

Don’t you go changing, either! What will stay the same for you this year?

  1. I can relate to your “standard ‘eat better, move more, be more organized’ sort of goals.” I love the idea of leaving each post with a song. Hit it, Billy!

    • Those goals never change for me – they are always there.

And, you know, when I wrote that I would end on a song, I was thinking of my habit of occasionally writing about and referencing songs. But, now I am thinking that it might be fun to do a song project in 2013: end a post with a song that the post brings to mind, maybe? :)

  2. Star Trek captains are important to know about. Great list all around.

both ear worms I don’t mind at all.

sigh….just gonna ponder on Mr Darcy for a few moments… :)

  7. Great list! I used the same original title ;) I wonder how many others did that (yours is the first I’m reading today).

  8. Love your list! What a wonderful perspective on the new year’s resolutions. You’ve inspired me to write mine :)

  9. So glad I’m not the only one laughing too loudly AND I’m pretty excited to say that Lil Duck has picked up that trait as well. POWER TO THE LAUGHERS!

    • Here, here! I don’t know what it is about my laugh – whether I lose control of the volume or it just carries – but my laugh is usually always the loudest in the room. :)

  10. These were great and I was waiting for someone to use the Billy Joel song. You nailed it! Starting to blog was one of the highlights of 2012 for me too. I have become addicted to the creative process and the feedback. BTW, I agree wholeheartedly with Billy – Don’t go changin’. (I also agree with you and Taylor about coffee.) Ellen

  11. I don’t know how I do it, but I always manage to destroy the kitchen every time I cook, too.

  12. You so don’t want to see my kitchen after I have been cooking. Wonderful list!

  13. Love it! Clumsy is the new cute anyway!!

    • Thanks, Stasha! That’s kind of you to say. I don’t feel very cute when I am tripping over my feet, dropping stuff and spilling things on my shirt every day – but such is life! :)

  14. Oh my, we are so much alike then! :) Mr Darcy…Yep, and I forgot what I was trying to say! :)

  15. “Built-in software” – I like that idea! My husband and I are both so clumsy that we’re in fear for our children’s ability to make through gym class when the time comes.

    • Thankfully, my husband is not clumsy – so I am hoping that will balance things out for our children. But, maybe it’s not hereditary at all; I’m not sure. :)

  16. I’m glad I’m not the only one who cries all the time. I felt like such a baby!

    • Believe me, you are not the only one! My family looks at me to see if I am crying any time there is something even slightly touching happening. :)

  17. I am still LMAO at number 6! Guess it hits a little to close to home for me too. :D Great list!!!

  18. Awesome post! We focus so much on “bettering” ourselves that we forget we already have some good bits as we are :)
#4- You and me both, sister. I was on board to try this detox smoothie cleanse. I wasn’t worried a bit about not eating, but then I read you couldn’t have coffee (not a DROP) and I quit so fast it wasn’t even funny. Some things are necessary to life, right?

  19. Thanks for getting that song in my head! I love your list. I won’t change loving Star Trek & Darcy either.

I bet someone’s written a Austen book in space… off to google now :)

  21. I am with you on not doing the whole resolutions thing – I am more a work-in-progress year round!

I posted my listicles and then decided to cruise on through everyone’s and hey – great minds think alike including music! I’ll shout a big ol’ ME TOO when it comes to everything reminding me of a song!
